Creating Spaces for Entertaining

As Australians, there’s nothing we love more than being able to host dinner parties, BBQ’s, birthday parties and holiday events. But to do this, we need the perfect space in our home. At Urban Scene Construction, we design and create personalized entertaining spaces for our clients depending on their needs and their piece of land/current home layout.

So, if you’re currently searching for Queenslander renovation ideas or house extension ideas for an entertaining space, we’ve got you covered. Our team at Urban Scene Construction is here to share their experience and knowledge when it comes to entertaining spaces.

So, how do we create the ultimate space for entertaining? Namely, creating a truly functional entertaining space starts in the design and planning process.

Here’s a list of our top tips to ensure that the atmosphere of your entertaining design is functional, warm and inviting.

Top Tips for Creating Entertaining Spaces

  1. Create Distinctive Spaces

First of all, you need to make sure your overall home design separates public and private spaces. In other words, create a clear separation between the bedrooms and bathrooms and the kitchen, living room and dining room.

To ensure your public areas are welcoming and warm, try to create a natural flow between your living, dining, and kitchen area.

Including dimmers is yet another great idea for entertaining spaces because they help you set the mood with the lighting. You don’t want your space to be too bright or too dark, so getting the lighting right is essential.

  1. Incorporate an Easy Flow

This is crucial in every home design and something you’ll find online by searching for house extension ideas. When designing your entertainment space, make sure it offers an easy, natural flow with different options for standing, sitting and conversing.

To encourage flow in entertaining spaces it’s best to keep the space open and as large as you can afford.

For example, if you want to renovate your home and add a patio extension to your downstairs area specifically for entertaining, we might suggest the following:

  • Make the flooring as large as you possibly can without interfering with the yard space.

  • Keep it open. Ensure not to section any spaces off.

  • Depending on the type of entertaining space you are going for, you might opt for a large dining table to the right and a lounge set with a coffee table to the left. For convenience purposes you may also wish to use a table that extends so that you are prepared for smaller and larger crowds.

  • Keep the patio lighting warm and use the inside lights as the white light to add some extra light onto the patio when needed (this ensures the patio isn’t too bright all the time).

  • You may also wish to think of aspects such as a bar area, a bar fridge or a pool/pingpong table as well to keep things light and fun.

  1. Offer Ample Seating Options

Offering more than just one seating option is what’s going to take your space from a dining area to an entertaining area. But at the end of the day, this will depend on the amount of space you have to work with. If there is enough space however, make sure to include two or three different seating options or areas for guests to sit and congregate.

For example, you may include stylish bar stools to add a sense of authenticity to your kitchen island, chairs and benches for your dining table, and a comfy sofa with an armchair, an ottoman, or poufs.

But, try not to get lost in your home design ideas, thinking of aesthetics only can limit you. Instead, be practical and use furniture that is both comfortable and made of materials resistant to spills and stains. And, make sure you can circulate the furniture layout to create interaction and flow between people.

  1. Include an Open Plan

This last point has been mentioned throughout as it is probably our biggest tip of all; an open plan layout it sets the tone for the space. The simplest and easiest way to create a space for entertaining is to open up the floor/space. So, if your current home design is a sectioned layout, consider removing walls to open the entertaining area up. Keeping an entertaining area sectioned off creates segregation and makes the space seem small.

And, if you’re incorporating an indoor and outdoor space for the entertaining area, just make sure to create a seamless connection between the two. This can be achieved quite easily by installing glass sliding doors.
