Renovating your house - where to start

We all know how exciting house renovations can be; from transforming your home, adding more space, to completely evolving your home to fit your needs. However, renovating comes with a lot of planning and preparation so it’s important to work with a team you trust and who can guide you through the renovation process.

All renovations, no matter the size, require close attention to detail and each step needs to be finalised before continuing which can be an overwhelming task, so we have put together this renovators checklist to kickstart your house renovation journey.

Where do I start?
Develop a plan or goal
The first step to any house renovation is to develop a vision or goal for what you want the end product to look like. Do you want to give your home a facelift with an entirely new look, extend or remove a room, repurpose a certain feature like a verandah, or build it to be stronger and more durable - the end goals are entirely up to you.

Spending some time to consider the features in your property and how these can be added to or utilised through the renovation process is a great first step. Creating a collection of images, books, magazines, or videos that showcase features you may like to include within your home is great to help communicate your vision to tradesmen and designers who can help bring your ideas to life.

Set a budget
Whether you are renovating for profit, or simply just want to enhance your existing home there are always financial considerations to be made before commencing any house extensions in Brisbane. Setting a realistic but firm budget lays the foundation for any project, allowing you to determine exactly what you can achieve with your renovation.

Think about how you will complete your pre-construction
For those who feel relatively confident they want to coordinate their project through this phase, you might want to complete part or all of this first step.  You will need to coordinate all working, drawing and documentation to provide this to a builder for a quote, or you may wish to only complete part of this phase and work with a builder to complete the rest.

Working with a builder through all or part of the pre-construction phase is a good option to consider, a reputable builder would have a regular team they work with and using this knowledge can only help with the further success of your project.

Find a reputable builder
Once your ideas are set and you have decided how you will complete the preconstruction phase, engaging a professional builder who has experience in house renovations is crucial. You want a builder that has a good reputation and has a great team of trades who work with them.

It’s also important to choose someone you think you can work with. The renovation journey is long, so having a builder and process you feel comfortable with is essential. Your builder should be well versed in house renovations and be able to guide you through the construction process from start to finish.

Renovating your house is an exciting time, and taking the necessary steps to plan and prepare ensures you and your family will enjoy your updated home for many years to come.
